CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
PAWS AND PERIMETERS
Walking into your school when itâs totally empty is creepy as anything, even if youâve been going there since kindergarten. Holding the extender out in front of me helped. It made me feel like a real witch. A witch who could do battle, not just open a flower shop.
I donât know why Cousin Cynthia thought I needed to tie my hair up, but it was cute, so I went with it. Othello made more sense. Miss Lafleur was right. Having him with me did help. At first I was afraid to put him down. I thought he wouldnât follow. That heâd get separated from me the way Lynx got separated from Miss Lafleur.
When I put Othello down, though, he never went more than ten steps away. Once he did heâd run back, rub his head against my ankle, and run out again. It was truly adorable, especially when he stopped right in front of the four lockers we picked and started rolling on the ground like it was a tiny patch of catnip. I knew what was happening. I couldnât see it, but there must have been magic on the ground. How in the world did it get there? I paused and focused, trying to pull my magic to the surface. No matter how hard I tried, it stayed stuck behind the candy wrapper. In the meantime, Othello finished rolling and ran off, presumably to look for more magic. I shook my head and went after him. Thatâs why Miss Lafleur had me bring Othello. Yes, Othelloâs cuteness did soften the creepy of an empty school, but greedy magic-gobbler that he was, heâd probably lead me to every stray bit of magic around the building, including the termites.
Iâm not gonna lie. After a few minutes, following Othello with the extender was kind of fun. He was like a tiny tiger on a hunt, running circles around the Ben Franklin and Oretha Castle Haley statues, pouncing on more than one candy wrapper in a corner, and scrambling up and down stairs like a pro. He even stopped in front of Ms. Coulonâs room, where I took the opportunity to tell him that thatâs where the Mathletes list would be posted once we were done. I didnât know which of his stops were magic and which were kitten exploration, so I followed him down hallways, past new lockers and old lockers, through the cafeteria, back out to the gym, and over to the fence, leaving tiny drops of magic from the extender everywhere he paused. Eventually, thereâd be enough dots to make a channel of influence that could lead the termites out. Miss Lafleur and Lynx watched us the whole time. I didnât notice them at first, but once I did it was hard not to, what with Lynx being huge and Miss Lafleur staring at me through the rose-colored glasses. It felt like I was back at Belles Demoiselles and she was scoring my every move, except this time I knew what I was doing.
